Connecting Artists with the Buying Public

By Susan Nash, interior designer, educator and artist.

When looking for furnishings, most interior designers look online, at least initially.  Ease of shopping on a website is everything, and time is money.  Those of us who select artwork, usually end up spending an extraordinary amount of time searching for pieces we feel are perfect for the client. So much time that we often end up undercharging.

Here are a few ideas that might make your artwork more easily accessible to interior designers and other clients:

  • Create an easy shopping experience with artwork featured in small enough images that the viewer can see (and compare) many at a glance.

  • Clearly list the size and price of each piece to see at a glance. (Important!)

  • Have filters for size and orientation. (These are the first things we consider)

  • For each artwork, have one or two photos showing only the artwork with a zoom feature for close-up views of detail and texture.

  • Have one image of artwork staged with a piece of furniture and accessories to show relative size. I could advise you further on styling the setting if helpful.

  • Make sure that the images of your work are photographed in good natural indirect light, combined with good quality artificial light.  (I suggest LED bulbs in the 3000K range) Color should be accurate in its presentation.

  • Have a feature to message the artist for questions or to arrange delivery or pick-up.

  • Consider allowing a try-before-you-buy option.

  • Have a “shopping cart” and” buy now” feature to allow shoppers to purchase online if they wish to do so.

  • Offer designers a discount (Perhaps a discount code for designers registered with your website.)

  • Have a clear policy message on returns, for example, a two-day return policy, or no returns.

  • Offer contact information for an installer to hang the work, and a designer to adjust the décor to better enhance the artwork.

I hope this gives you food for thought. If I can help your clients create the perfect setting for your artwork, I hope you will consider recommending my services. If I can help you in any additional way, please reach out.
