Guild of Charlotte Artists Judged Virtual Show, 2021

This online show was held from June 15, 2021 – August 15, 2021. There were 55 accepted entries. Various styles and mediums were entered, including but not limited to acrylic, collage, mixed media, oil, paper, and watercolor. The judge was David Boyd, Jr., AIS, OPA. His website is here. The judging criterion was based on a thorough and objective evaluation of each piece. The judge prioritized the visual impact of the artwork and selected works that made a strong impression. He then focused on composition and design, evaluating the arrangement of shapes and colors. Technical aspects such as drawing, use of depth, edge manipulation, and surface texture were also considered. Finally, the presentation was considered, with emphasis on the quality of the photograph. The judge brings valuable personal experience to his approach, having been judged in shows. He consciously tries to be impartial and objective in his evaluations, prioritizing the criteria of visual impact, composition, design, technical aspects, and presentation.

First Place Winner

Yvonne Boesel

Collection Oil, 30" x 40", $1225

This painting has everything in it that makes for a strong painting. The big shapes of light and shadow are well arranged and interesting. The painting is very harmonious, the simplified palette of color. Energy. Surface quality. Transparency of layers

Second Place Winner

Kim Gibbs

Mystery Oil, 36" x 36", $2400

Mystery has a very strong composition. You are immediately allowed into the painting and invited to look around. The eye travels very well through the piece. The use of atmosphere gives the painting great depth while the energy of mark-making and texture allows the viewer to enjoy this painting on another level.
— David Boyd, Judge

Third Place Winner

Prudy Weaver

Iggy Oil, 20" x 20", $1100 [SOLD]

The composition of this piece and its strong use of contrast are immediate. The horizontal and vertical bands of harmonized darks pull you into the focal point which is at a diagonal and more organic that other elements. The strength of value and rendering in this piece are a great combination.
— David Boyd, Judge

Craig Ritchie

The harmony and rhythm of this pull you in. The contrasting use of color and direction, and the nature of the shapes allow you as the viewer to never be bored and to travel throughout the piece.
