Announcing Our 2024 Winter Show Winners

First Place

LAURIE RICHARDSON

Acrylic Nonobjective

I was drawn to this small painting right away. It has what I call “Wall Power.” That comes from strong contrast of black and white and subtle colors with soft tones of cool blues and greens that sparkle with warm accents. Up close it has a nice play of whimsical lines, shapes, and patterns with a simple, black frame that is a nice complement to the piece.
— Judge Gary Freeman

Second Place

ANNA GALLANT CARTER

Digital Image of Gears

I liked the strength of this image. It makes me think of a massive ship like the Titanic. Beyond the historical content though, the repetition of the circular shapes in contrast with the diagonal lines in the spokes create a nice break up of space in what amounts to a great formal composition. It also has a nice play of sunlight and a beautiful patina over the surfaces. It took a good eye to capture this image and add in high-quality printing and presentation.

Third Place

DEVANN DONOVAN GARDNER

Birthday Party Painting

This painting has a full range from deep to subtle tones with good contrast of complementary colors. Overall, it has just the right mix of texture, detail, and simplicity. The double image of the figure suggests movement and mystery. The multiple hearts and party hat add to the intrigue. The viewer is left to ponder a deeper meaning.

Honorable Mention

STEVEN ALLISON

Watercolor of Foliage

This closeup of a plant takes me to a path in a garden that is a little unkept. It’s like finding a treasure in a jungle. It has beautiful rich jewel-like textures and colors – warm reds and pinks with cool accents. The watercolor brushwork is woven together to create a tapestry of detail and depth.
— Judge Gary Freeman

Honorable Mention

REGINA BURCHETT

Pastel Waterscape

This well-rendered small pastel is a nice play of the real and the reflected. It is a wonderful study of light and color with subtle, soft tones – cool blues, greens, and violets that sparkle with warm accents. The curves and diagonals in the clouds create movement and perspective that draw you into the image and contrast against the stillness of the land and water below.
— Judge Gary Freeman

Honorable Mention

MARGARET FLEEMAN

Abstract Still-Life

This is an interesting still-life that reminds me of Picasso. The sharp contrast of light to dark and the complementary colors of dark blue against orange make for a lot of wall power. The raw painterly brushwork and the simplicity of shapes and marks give this composition a modern art feel.
— Judge Gary Freeman

Honorable Mention

VANESSA THORMAN

Cow Profile

This is a very nice, detailed rendering of a cow’s profile. It makes good use of the principle of economy. It is a very straightforward work presented in a simple, clean, direct manner – black and white like the cow.
— Judge Gary Freeman

Honorable Mention

ANN TRAVIS

Large Painting of Peonies

This large painting of flowers is reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe but different because of the addition of multiple views of the flower and a soft cloud-like background. It makes me think of a dream-like memory of a flower. It is handled well and has nice movement from lower left to upper right which adds to the dream-like quality.
— Judge Gary Freeman

Honorable Mention

BENNETT WATERS

Large Nonobjective painting

There is a lot to take in in viewing this large canvas. There is much contrast in value and color – deep blacks and pure whites, cool blue tones with shots of warm accents. I think I see a horizontal grid within the shapes, lines, and textures that gives the work an underlying rhythm and structure. There is a lyrical quality in the painterly brushwork that makes me think of the movement of notes in jazz.
